On September 15, Midtown Reader had the exciting pleasure of hosting New York Times best-selling author and former GOP communications operative Tim Miller for a discussion on his new book Why We Did It. Tim was in conversation with his former colleague and our owner, Sally Bradshaw. The discussion was lively and informative and focused on the challenges that Republicans faced in the 2016 contest and why so many overlooked their previous objections to Donald Trump to ensure his election. Tim generously answered audience questions and signed books following the standing-room-only event-- several eager audience members listened from the back of the store, alongside the bookshelves and even the staircase.
Tim and Sally began by sharing several stories from their time working together in Jeb Bush’s 2016 Presidential campaign, and their mutual respect and friendship were evident. The audience shared many laughs as they listened to their experiences, including the time after the campaign when Tim hid in a men's bathroom. They also gained new perspective and understanding, as Tim provided a sobering review of his service as one of the top Republican communications professionals during the last several decades.
As the conversation continued, Tim shared his personal challenges working for the Republican party as a gay man and the tension between wanting to win and facing his own personal history as some of his employers actively campaigned against gay marriage. He also acknowledged the multitude of Trump books in the market but said he was motivated to write an honest exploration of why so many Republicans went along with the Trump campaign.
After a great discussion and a Q&A with the audience, attendees were able to visit with Tim personally as he signed multiple books. The night ended with Tim purchasing a book from the bookstore, in support of his former colleague.
