Tomorrow (Saturday, November 11) we'll be celebrating our one year anniversary. Your whole-hearted support of our new indie bookstore makes us feel like more of a mission than a retail establishment.
We're so proud to be your neighborhood bookstore. We know you have a choice in where you purchase your next read, and by picking us, you are sending a clear signal that you want a thriving independent bookstore in Tallahassee and that reading local matters. We promise to keep working hard to provide interesting and thoughtful programming and content to meet your reading needs.
Thanks to you, we've hosted many fabulous authors including Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Olen Butler, #1 New York Times best-selling author Daniel Silva, and indie superstars like Molly Brodak, Will Schwalbe, and Finn Murphy, among others. The talented Jeff VanderMeer, whose books are being adapted into films, joined us for our quarterly author series with the Tallahassee Democrat. And middle grade best-selling author Cassie Beasley kicked off our "Authors in Schools" program, appearing before 700 middle school students in public, private and charter schools here in Leon County. We now host our own monthly book club and Read-to-Lead panels, in which we invite local leaders to join us and talk about the books that have shaped them. And our monthly Story Slam features the best local writing talent in the Big Bend. All of these opportunities are providing diverse and compelling events for our community.
Most importantly, we have so many new friends. The Midtown Reader community has become like family to us. We especially have to thank a few "family members" for their continuous support and encouragement. National Book award winner Bob Shacochis has been unwavering in his commitment to our effort. FSU prof, author and journalist Diane Roberts has been a constant presence and evangelist for the store. Bob Butler encourages his audiences to purchase from us. Tampa Bay Times journalist Craig Pittman was our first author in store, taking a chance on a new indie and now constantly re-posting on social media about our adventures. Poets Barbara Hamby, David Kirby and Jimmy Kimbrell never say "no" to our many requests, and expose us to the wonderful world of poetry on a regular basis. FSU Ph.D. student Sean Towey has built our Story Slam from scratch, and expanded our community reach to give our great local authors the attention they deserve. FSU award winning author Ravi Howard not only participates in our events but buys all of his reading from us as do Ann and Jeff VanderMeer.
FAMU Journalism prof Ann Kimbrough is talking us up even while on sabbatical in Chicago teaching at Northwestern this semester. Middle grade author Faith Harkey is in store weekly, a constant friendly and encouraging presence. The Tallahassee Democrat team including Skip Foster, Leslie Smith, Jennifer Portman and C.D. Davidson-Hiers keep readers in the loop on our activities and encourage reading at every turn. Repeat customers like Howard Rasmussen send our event info to their social media lists and wear their Midtown Reader t-shirts everywhere they go. The list goes on and on. Every one of you who has made the decision to purchase from us instead of going somewhere else - placing a special order, taking home a staff pick, asking our recommendation or giving us suggestions on books to shelve - has helped grow Midtown Reader into a community hub.
Many thanks Tallahassee, and here's to another great year of reading, thinking and sharing.
